118 is the Emergency Phone Number, analogous to US 911.

In this project GESP carried out and designed the software to optimize and minimize ambulances’ paths in urban area, due to emergency calls.

The system is based on the RDBMS Oracle, Bentley MicroStation and GeoGraphics software and uses a TeleAtlas graph which describes the street network of a given city. The communication peripheral - centre  module is developed in Java. The purpose of the 118 project is to display a route of an ambulance finding the shortest path connecting two location. Besides, the system allows to identify the hospital more suitable for the transported people, including the possibility to investigate the availability of the beds, of medicines and so on.

An advanced algorithm has been developed to track vehicles running on the urban road system and to minimize the distance and/or the time spent by the vehicle to reach the target destination (a less used option identifies the route having the minimum number of cross-roads).

A parametric schema, based on impendence concept, attributes traffic weights to arcs and nodes and take into account several navigation solutions to connect A and B locations inside the town.

A pilot (but real) application has been released for important towns in Italy as Ascoli Piceno, Ancona and Naples. Inside the project GESP developed the data exchange module able to place the ambulance on the map’s road system, and to elaborate the best route.
