Client: Snam Rete Gas (Eni Group)

Snam Rete Gas (SRG) is the major Italian gas transmission pipeline company and transports approximately 90% of the total gas volumes flowing into Italy by means of its own transportation network which is about 31.000 km long. GESP is supplier of SRG since 1995 and provides services and solutions in the field of GIS.

The project regards the enhancement and correction of a large GIS dataset involving the representation of pipelines, plants, and other geometries (as valves, joints, electrical measurements points, etc.) used by SIGAS (the Graphic and Alphanumeric Information System implemented by SRG to manage its own pipeline network and carried out by GESP). At the beginning of SIGAS implementation, the business data (pipelines and plants) were geo-referenced using IGM (Military Geographic Institute) and CTR (Regional Technical Cartography) maps at the scale 1:25.000 (the former) and 1:10.000 (the latter). Separate cadastral maps-based digital maps are also used to process legal and administrative issues concerning the pipelines’ crossings.

Following the recent publication of more advanced digital data, SRG decided to update the whole business dataset, employing Aerial Ortho-Photos and Satellite Imagery provided by Telespazio, GESP’s partner and satellite images leader in Europe.

The project’s objectives are:

The basic upgrading and re-building process uses aerial ortho-photos (50 cm resolution), involving 8 km buffer zone around the pipelines (4 km per side). These images are remotely provided by Telespazio by means of an OGC-WMS service (Open GeoSpatial Consortium, Web Map Server). Differently, the maintenance of the GIS dataset is based on yearly updating based on GeoEye-1 Satellite Imagery.
